The biggest predictor of how a bench ages is the material of the slats and frame, followed by how well water drains off it. Anything that traps moisture between slats, at joints, or under a leg fails there first.

Styles and What Each One Is Actually For

Style should follow the job the bench is doing, not the other way around. A backless bench along a border is a poor choice for an evening of conversation, and a deep three-seater will overwhelm a 6 ft (1.8 m) courtyard.

Small Gardens, Balconies, and Tight Spots

A 5 ft (1,520 mm) bench needs closer to 6 ft (1.8 m) of clear run once you allow side clearance, so in a courtyard the answer is usually a 42-48 in (1,070-1,220 mm) two-seater, a backless bench that tucks under a window, or a corner bench.

Where the money goes is slat thickness, joinery, and hardware. A $200 acacia bench and a $700 eucalyptus bench can look similar in a photograph, but the cheaper one usually has 0.6 in (15 mm) slats, dowelled joints, and zinc-plated screws.
